For smaller ships however, who are able to fit under the harbour bridge, they may depart from the White Bay Cruise Terminal located near Balmain.
A highlight of departing from White Bay, is the experience of sailing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge on your sail-away - an experience passengers on the larger cruise ships miss out on due to the height restrictions to pass under the bridge.
Getting to White Bay Cruise Terminal
The biggest disadvantage of cruising from White Bay is its accessibility. There is no public transport links to/from the cruise terminal, and also no long-term parking if you were able to drive to the terminal.
Some cruise lines, will offer and airport shuttle to/from the port to the airport for passengers:
- P&O Australia, around $20pp. Call 1300 159 454 (AU) or 0800 780 716 (NZ) to book.
- Princess Cruises, around $24pp
Private Shuttles
Independent Travel
You can also travel independently to White Bay. There is limited parking for drop-off and pick-up if you have friends or family giving you a lift.
Uber and Taxis are both available, with a taxi rank located outside the cruise terminal.
There are also a number of independent shuttle transfer companies who operate shuttles from both the Sydney CBD and airport to the White Bay Cruise Terminal.
It is important to note, that when travelling by vehicle to the terminal, you must access the port via The Crescent / James Craig Road. Entry via Robert Street is closed to cruise passengers on days there is a ship in port.
The Port Authority of NSW has published a map to help navigate.
Luggage Storage
If you arrive early before your cruise, the bag drop usually opens around 9am for most cruises, so you can leave your bags and explore the area.
When disembarking from your cruise, there are no luggage storage facilities at the terminal, so you must take your luggage with you.
Shopping and Last Minute Supplies
Once again, its location means that White Bay Cruise Terminal is not within easy access of shops should you need some last minute supplies.
If you were hoping to buy cans of soft drink to take onboard, last minute needs from the chemist, or a bottle shop the closest stores are located around a 30 minute walk from the terminal at Darling Street in Balmain.
